Statement on Withdrawal of Men’s Sevens Programme

Rugby Players Ireland wishes to express its disappointment at the news that the Ireland Men’s Sevens programme will cease from August. While we understand that the decision was influenced by wider funding structures and compounded by a devolved World Rugby model, its impact on our members is nonetheless significant.

This outcome carries immediate professional and personal consequences for the players and staff involved. We therefore regret that clarity around the future of the programme has come at this late stage, leaving the individuals concerned to make significant decisions under unnecessary time pressure.

Throughout this period of uncertainty, Rugby Players Ireland has been working closely with its affected members. The players’ association will continue to ensure they are supported as they navigate this unexpected transition. In addition to their dedicated Player Development Manager Gráinne Finnegan, players have access to programmes such as Rugby Players Ireland’s Mental Wellbeing Service.

CEO of Rugby Players Ireland, Simon Keogh said: “We are immensely disappointed by this news. Through adversity, these individuals have continued to represent Ireland with pride and commitment, and they deserve every assistance as they take the next step in their professional careers, on or off the pitch.

“We must also pay tribute to all those who have gone before them. In recent seasons the Irish Men’s Sevens have scaled unprecedented heights, earning great respect on the global stage. This news will be disheartening to a group that worked tirelessly to bring Ireland to the top tier of Sevens rugby.

“Over the coming weeks and months we will continue to work closely with the players involved. Our priority remains their ongoing fair treatment and wellbeing.

“We will also maintain close engagement with the IRFU to gain a fuller understanding of this decision, facilitate a smooth transition for the players, and work with them on the continued development of the Women’s Sevens programme.”
