RPI led Research Highlights the Importance of Identity beyond Rugby

New research led by Dr. Deirdre Lyons and Dr. Emma Burrows of Rugby Players Ireland, in collaboration with the University of Queensland, offers fresh insight into the role of identity in youth rugby talent development.

The study explored how different forms of identity – including sport, club and broader social identities – relate to well-being among early-career academy players in Ireland.

Findings show that while players feel a strong sense of belonging within rugby, their overall life satisfaction is linked to something broader: their confidence in managing multiple social identities, including family, education and friendships. Notably, well-being was not associated with a singular ‘athlete identity’.

These insights align with the Social Identity Model of Identity Change (SIMIC), highlighting the importance of maintaining diverse connections during key career transitions.

The research reinforces the value of supporting players beyond performance, helping them develop and sustain identities outside of rugby as part of a holistic approach to player development.
